Job Summary:

As a Provisional Licensed Dietitian with the Cherokee Nation, you will play a vital role in assessing the nutritional needs of individuals and groups, planning and implementing nutrition counseling and education services tailored to the cultural, social, and economic conditions of our service population.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide health care services to eligible individuals in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States.
  • Practice within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills required for continuing professional competence.
  • Participate in planning for the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program with other team members.
  • Assist with meeting requirements to maintain accreditation for the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program with the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
  • Formulate modified diet plans and provide nutrition counseling to clients with therapeutic diet orders.
  • Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy to high-risk patients identified through patient registers, nutrition screening assessments, and staff referrals.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct training programs for patients, families, and clinic staff.
  • Perform Quality Improvement (QI) activities and participate in other QI activities in the clinic.
  • Coordinate Medical Nutrition Therapy and nutrition education activities for the clinical site.
  • Adhere to professional ethical standards.
  • Maintain and update documentation of nutrition counseling inpatient records as needed to meet the nutritional needs of the patient.
  • Take reasonable action to inform a client's physician and any appropriate allied health care provider in cases where a client's nutritional status indicates a change in medical status.
  • Plan, conduct, or participate in and interpret, evaluate, and utilize pertinent current research related to nutritional care.
  • Comply with provisions of the Oklahoma Controlled Substances Act.
  • Adhere to professional ethical standards as established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Comply with applicable state and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety, and confidentiality of any health services records created, maintained, transferred, or destroyed.
  • Maintain verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal and/or state regulations.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or otherwise authorized or required by law or court order.
  • Notify the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision within thirty (30) days of any change in address, telephone number, and employment and shall supply an updated copy to Cherokee Nation Human Resources.
  • Renew licenses or certifications and specialty designations before the expiration date.
  • Provide Cherokee Nation Human Resources with a copy of all licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times and protect all personal health information (PHI) as it relates to patient data.
Qualifications:
  • Must possess a Bachelors degree from a 4-year college or university which held accreditation, at the time the degree was conferred, from accepted regional educational accrediting associations as reported by the American Association of Collegiate Registrar and Admissions Officers which includes a minimum of 24 semester hours from the fields of human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management, or an equivalent major course of study as may be approved by the Board.
  • A substantial equivalent major course of study shall be defined as either:
    • (1) A Bachelors degree including a minimum of 30 semester hours specifically designated to train a person to apply and integrate scientific principles of human nutrition under different health, social, cultural, physical, psychological, and economic conditions to the proper nourishment, care, and education of individuals or groups through the life cycle. Of these 30 semester hours, a minimum of 18 semester hours must be from human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management;
    • (2) A Bachelors degree including a major course of study meeting the minimum academic requirements to qualify for examination by the Commission.
  • After meeting the academic requirements, persons applying for licensure must be registry eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration by having completed an internship or pre-planned professional experience program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or enrolled and within three (3) months of completing an ACEND approved internship or pre-planned professional experience program.
  • No additional experience required.
  • An individual should have knowledge of Database, Inventory, Spreadsheet, and Word Processing software, and Order processing systems.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
  • If under supervision (Dietitian Eligible), must have a temporary letter authorizing practice under the direct, on-site supervision of a dietitian licensed in Oklahoma, except those applicants with evidence of current registration may practice under general supervision or a provisional license from the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
  • Preferred Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist or CDCES. Must also maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Must have knowledge of computers and audio/video equipment.
  • Employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers; or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information.
  • Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
