The Manager Nursing will be responsible for 24/7 accountability for the unit area. Key responsibilities include providing leadership and communication, monitoring the work environment, ensuring quality, managing the fiscal budget, managing human resources, and delivering competent clinical practice.


Responsibilities

Nurse Manager for a 17-bed Medical Surgical PCU (7B), the following responsibilities will include:



To succeed in this role, we require:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Nurse Manager role or equivalent management experience.
  • Prior Nursing ICU experience is preferred.


Key responsibilities include:



1. Supporting and actualizing the Division of Nursing philosophy and goals by assuming leadership in program development and implementation.


2. Developing staff to assume leadership roles both formally and informally, via role modeling and facilitating staff participation in shared governance structures.


3. Facilitating the development and implementation of solutions to problems.


4. Developing and implementing effective communication channels to provide information to all staff members, holding at least one unit meeting per month with posting of minutes and notice.


5. Directing and participating in the orientation of new employees, evaluating programs' effectiveness and employees' progress.


6. Having an identified council structure with an elected Staff Nurse Professional Practice Council representative, conducting unit council meetings monthly, incorporating new knowledge and skills to meet changing needs of patient families, department employees, and institution.


7. Having a positive working relationship and problem-solving with other members of the patient care delivery team, including physicians and other departments.


8. Participating in committees and task forces as indicated.


9. Facilitating staff to assume leadership roles.


10. Demonstrating positive leadership skills and communication that embraces changes, resulting in achievement of outcomes.


11. Staff actively participating in clinical decision-making affecting practice.


12. Promoting a caring, helpful environment, including the arrangement of the physical setting and assembling equipment in a manner conducive to more effective and efficient nursing care.


13. Participating in unit, service, and divisional CQI/CQE programs, documenting results, reporting by deadlines, formulating corrective action plans for improvement.


14. Meeting established research-based standards of care, quality control targets, operationalizing CQI.


15. Developing a multidisciplinary program to monitor quality patient care indicators.


16. Maintaining fiscal budget within established variance, focusing on HPPD, labor cost per day, overtime, orientation costs, SSP costs, and medical supplies.


17. Adjusting staffing patterns according to unit activity and patient acuity.


18. Reviewing fiscal worksheets, analyzing variances, and implementing appropriate action plans.


19. Developing and managing the unit budget to control operational and capital expenditures for capital equipment priorities based on patient unit needs and according to budget policy.


20. Shared leadership in place with structured recruitment and retention and PEP/professional practice.


21. Facilitating professional growth and development of staff utilizing career development plans, identifying staff career development and training needs, using CQI/CQE and staff input for development of educational programs.


22. Demonstrating accountability for human and material resource management with division guidelines and standards by monitoring, correcting variances for productive and non-productive utilization.


23. Complying with personnel policies and procedures, following guidelines, and conducting effective performance interviews, job standards are understood by employees, etc.


24. Directing and participating in the orientation of new employees, evaluating programs' effectiveness and employees' progress.


25. Participating in an innovative program (pilot study, research project, etc.) that has an effect on patient care within the past year.


26. Participating in a professional organization (i.e., specialty or administration).


27. Maintaining clinical exposure through actual intervention, coordination of patient care, role modeling, consulting, problem-solving, and in-services.


28. Ensuring the effective delivery of competent, compassionate nursing care based on social, psychological, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients as demonstrated by patient care outcomes achieved through established standards of care and by the patients and families' perception of care.


Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:



*Bachelor's Degree and Registered Nurse



For leadership roles, new hires should have:



Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 3 years leadership experience required; clinical leadership in the discipline preferred



OR



Master's Degree and no experience (not required but PREFERRED)
