Staff Attorney

The Center for Biological Diversity is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Attorney to join our Climate Law Institute in California. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in advancing our legal strategies to reduce oil and gas pollution and promote a just transition to clean energy.
Job Summary:We are looking for a talented attorney with a strong background in civil litigation and a passion for environmental law. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience in litigation and be licensed to practice law in California. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to develop and implement effective legal and regulatory interventions to reduce oil and gas pollution and ensure that polluters pay to properly decommission and remediate their oil and gas infrastructure in California.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and implement legal and regulatory strategies to reduce oil and gas pollution and promote a just transition to clean energy.
- Work with our team and allies to track, monitor, and influence legislation and regulatory processes related to oil and gas pollution.
- Advocate in administrative processes, including commenting on proposed oil and gas projects and rulemakings.
- Litigate cutting-edge cases under the California Environmental Quality Act and other laws.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies and key allies to advance our policy priorities.
- Prepare communications, such as press releases, op-eds, and fact sheets, to promote our work and engage with the public.
- Minimum three years of civil litigation experience.
- Licensed to practice law in California.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a litigation docket and work effectively with colleagues and organizations with diverse goals and perspectives.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with environmental statutes, such as the California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Clean Air Act.
- Ability to supervise and mentor staff attorneys and legal fellows.
- Existing relationships and experience working with environmental-justice and community-based organizations.
