Job Overview

Under the guidance of a Maintenance Supervisor, the selected candidate will operate vehicles and machinery that require a Class C driver's license, performing essential tasks related to the upkeep of trees along highways. This role may involve travel, with provisions for meals and lodging.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ascend trees exceeding 40 feet using ropes or climbing gear, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Trim or remove branches and limbs using both power tools and hand tools.
  • Apply protective treatments to cut surfaces to prevent pest infestations and fungal growth.
  • Safely lower cut branches using rigging techniques.
  • Occasionally fell and remove entire trees as required.
  • Engage in planting, nurturing, and irrigating trees.
  • Manage brush and weed control along transportation rights-of-way and state facilities.
  • Maintain and service climbing and trimming equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Conduct traffic control measures as necessary.
  • Utilize aerial equipment and pneumatic/hydraulic tools for various tasks.
  • Operate a brush chipper to clear cut vegetation from work sites.

Equipment Operation

Responsible for the operation of vehicles and machinery requiring a Class C driver's license, and with appropriate licensing, may operate Category 1 or 2 equipment. This includes performing routine maintenance, minor repairs, and keeping accurate records of equipment usage.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain detailed records including crew reports, equipment checks, fuel consumption, and material usage.

Working Conditions

This position may involve working in various weather conditions and requires physical stamina and agility.

Special Requirements

  • A valid and unrestricted Class C driver's license is mandatory.
  • Applicants should provide detailed information regarding their experience with tree climbing, tools used, and relevant work performed.
  • Minimum qualifications include either nine months of experience in a tree maintenance crew within California state service or one year of tree trimming experience involving trees over 40 feet in height.
