This department has evolved through significant historical events, including the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, to provide comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services to approximately 1.5 million individuals within the city's 49 square miles.
Position Overview
This role encompasses a comprehensive classification with three distinct levels: Level I EMT, Level II Paramedic, and Level III Firefighter Paramedic. Depending on the classification level, personnel may engage in various responsibilities, including basic life support on ambulances (Level I EMT), advanced life support on ambulances (Level II Paramedic), or firefighting activities while providing advanced life support (Level III Firefighter Paramedic).
Responsibilities by Level
Level I - EMT
Under general oversight, the EMT responds to medical emergencies, performing essential life-saving measures. Responsibilities include:
1. Providing emergency medical services (EMS) and maintaining equipment.
2. Driving ambulances to deliver initial emergency care in pre-hospital settings.
3. Administering basic life support and first aid in accordance with established protocols.
4. Ensuring patient privacy and adhering to HIPAA regulations.
5. Working a 40-hour week, with shifts determined by operational needs.
Level II - Paramedic
In addition to Level I duties, the Paramedic provides advanced emergency medical care, including:
1. Conducting medical scene assessments and establishing command posts.
2. Supporting rescue operations and delivering critical care during emergencies.
3. Performing patient evaluations and administering advanced life support measures.
4. Conducting hazard assessments to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
5. Participating in ongoing training and fitness programs.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
1. Age: At least 19 years old at the time of application.
2. Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
3. Driving Record: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
4. Criminal Record: No felony convictions.
Additional Requirements for Level I
1. Current CA Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.
2. Valid Class A, B, or C California Driver License with Ambulance Driver endorsement.
3. Relevant work experience as an EMT or documented ambulance ride-along hours.
Additional Requirements for Level II
1. Current CA Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic license.
2. Relevant work experience as a Paramedic.
Selection Process
Candidates will undergo a series of assessments, including written tests, skills evaluations, and interviews to determine their suitability for the position.
