Position Overview

The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is accountable for the dietary management of patients. This role involves the planning, assessment, implementation, and evaluation of individualized nutritional care strategies. The specialist also contributes to menu adjustments and various nutrition-related activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. May provide mentorship and training to junior staff members.
2. Responsible for executing diverse clinical tasks and addressing basic challenges effectively.
3. Engages with patients and their families to gather nutritional histories, ascertain food preferences, assess nutritional status, and document findings in medical records.
4. Conducts comprehensive nutritional evaluations, formulates and implements tailored care plans, and collaborates with medical personnel to recommend nutrition strategies.
5. Suggests dietary modifications and/or supplemental nutrition to physicians, ensuring the accuracy of diet orders in alignment with physician directives.
6. Offers nutritional education, guidance, and counseling to patients and their families, in accordance with prescribed dietary regimens. Calculates nutrient profiles for tube feedings and dietary intakes as per physician orders.
7. Participates in menu modifications based on patient preferences and assists in the creation of standardized recipes while overseeing food service staff to ensure proper food handling and portion control.
8. Supports clinical operations by assisting team members and management in daily activities.
9. Develops and delivers individual and group educational sessions, referring clients to community resources as necessary. Actively engages in promoting wellness initiatives.
10. Establishes effective communication channels regarding nutritional information within the organization and the broader community.
11. Conducts training sessions for culinary, food service, and interdisciplinary teams on therapeutic diets and related subjects.
12. Engages in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities, including data collection and execution of assigned tasks.
13. Addresses or escalates operational challenges and technical issues to senior staff and management; adapts existing tools or processes as needed.
14. Performs additional duties as required. All responsibilities listed are considered essential functions of the role.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required.
Current Registered Dietitian Certification from the Commission on Dietetic Registration is mandatory.
Certification as a Dietitian Nutritionist in New York State (CDN) may be required.
Advanced or specialized certifications may be necessary.
1-3 years of pertinent experience is required.
