Position Overview: The main objective of this role is to assess and underwrite new accounts and renewals profitably, adhering to established guidelines and authority levels, while leading initiatives that influence the business positively. This position will handle larger, more significant, and intricate accounts. You will employ underwriting tools to ascertain precise classifications, rates, and premium assessments. A thorough understanding of state regulations, including cancellation and non-renewal policies, is essential for conducting business within the designated territory. You will be knowledgeable about coverage forms and policy language, ensuring the correct application of forms and exclusions. Additionally, you will assist in resolving premium audit disagreements with assigned agents and brokers, and be recognized as an authority in a specific product area, capable of mentoring junior underwriters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite and expand a portfolio primarily focused on Miscellaneous Errors and Omissions (E&O) business in a profitable manner.
- Identify suitable risks in line with underwriting strategies, providing constructive terms and conditions that benefit both Markel and our clients.
- Implement necessary corrective actions or enhancements on renewals.
- Collaborate closely with product line leaders to identify opportunities for product, process, and strategic improvements.
- Maintain regular communication with key producers to gather vital market insights and feedback regarding our competitive stance.
- Develop targeted growth plans aimed at specific production opportunities.
- Serve as a mentor to less experienced underwriting professionals.
- Engage actively with the professional liability team and leadership to identify cross-selling opportunities and enhance our platform.
- A four-year college degree is preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in financial lines underwriting, with a preference for Miscellaneous E&O experience.
- Strong technical and organizational capabilities.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven technical knowledge and skills reflecting a progression of responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability in relationship building, marketing, and sales.
- Willingness to adopt new technologies to improve outcomes.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
- A positive mindset, a collaborative spirit, and an appreciation for your workplace and colleagues.
- US Work Authorization is required; Markel does not offer visa sponsorship for this position.
