Role Summary: The Resident Technician is responsible for diagnosing and executing standard mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs, primarily in a field setting. This role may not require daily reporting to a workshop and may involve occasional overtime. Beyond typical technician duties, the Resident Technician will foster customer relationships, manage their own schedule, promote their services, advocate for the dealership, and deliver exceptional service without the support of a local shop.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Travel to assigned customer locations for service tasks.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot mechanical issues on heavy equipment as directed by the service manager.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools effectively.
  • Assess the extent of repairs needed, including identifying major powertrain overhaul requirements.
  • Prepare service orders and source necessary parts.
  • Repair or replace components of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical systems, and more to restore equipment functionality.
  • Communicate with the manager and customers regarding any challenges encountered during repairs.
  • Assist the service manager with customer billing processes.
  • Report any customer-related issues that hinder service delivery.
  • Build trust with customers and address any complaints effectively.
  • Interpret technical information from schematics, manuals, and regulations.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and modifications as required.
  • Keep the service manager updated on special parts orders and equipment malfunctions.
  • Complete all work orders and time sheets accurately and promptly.
  • Stay informed about products and technology through continuous education and reading.
  • Maintain cleanliness and serviceability of the service vehicle.
  • Control expenses while delivering high-quality work.
  • Develop a customer base within the assigned area to ensure a steady workflow.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Work Environment:

Employees in this role may frequently encounter dust, odors, oil, fumes, and noise. The noise level is typically moderate, and employees may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to various weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:

To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the following physical demands are necessary:

  • Ability to navigate the dealership and grounds for various tasks.
  • Capability to operate a commercial vehicle with appropriate licensing.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 20 lbs. regularly, 45 lbs. frequently, and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach above and below shoulder height.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders while carrying objects.
  • Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to operate powered devices as necessary.
  • Ability to push or pull up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
  • Must be capable of operating a service truck crane.
