Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomy Specialist to join our team at Lifespan. As a key member of our laboratory outreach services, you will be responsible for obtaining blood and other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain blood samples from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques, ensuring proper patient preparation and adherence to hospital policy.
  • Verify patient identity and obtain informed consent prior to specimen collection.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory and maintain accurate records of sample procurement.
  • Perform coagulation tests on outpatients, including bleeding times, and monitor patient reactions.
  • Label, wrap, and transport samples according to type and urgency, ensuring timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and supervisors to ensure smooth specimen collection and processing.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, adhering to universal precautions and infection control procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a recognized accrediting agency, or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with formal internship.
  • 6 months of phlebotomy experience, or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience in lieu of certification.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture techniques on adults, children, and infants.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare staff.
  • Clerical skills to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a fast-paced in-patient care environment with considerable walking and physical effort required.
  • Exposure to odors when handling specimens, and potential exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Manual dexterity required for venipuncture techniques.
