Chief Medical Officer

Duke Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Medical Officer to lead our medical staff and drive clinical excellence across our organization. As a key member of our executive leadership team, you will be responsible for setting the quality agenda, managing relationships among physician activities, and ensuring alignment with our strategic plans and clinical program priorities.

About the Role

The Chief Medical Officer will provide senior executive leadership for the hospital, facilitating medical staff interactions with hospital administration and the governing board to assure effective and efficient delivery of quality medical care. You will work closely with our clinical leadership teams to develop and implement quality metrics, lead hospital quality initiatives, and manage medical directors and medical coverage services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee medical affairs and serve as primary physician liaison among hospital administration, medical staff, and Duke University Health System.
  • Develop metrics and standards for DRH physicians and set goals to optimize performance.
  • Collaborate with DUHS Quality and Safety leadership to develop quality metrics and lead hospital quality initiatives.
  • Responsible for medical directors and medical coverage services for the hospital.
  • Directly oversee clinical and operational departments, including Medical Staff Services, Pharmacy, Nutrition Services, Advanced Practice, Emergency Medicine, Diabetes Management, and Infection Prevention.

Requirements

  • MD with unrestricted medical license required.
  • Minimum of seven or more years of clinical practice, participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities, and thorough management experience within a health care delivery system.
  • Three to five years of management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification in medical management preferred.
  • Additional advanced management degree (MBA, MHA) preferred.
