Job Overview

WSP is seeking a Project Accounting Consultant who can operate from any of our regional offices along the west coast.

As an experienced project accounting professional, you will provide essential financial and accounting support to Project Managers and their teams. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Reviewing project charges for accuracy and completing necessary cost transfers.
  • Establishing and updating funding as required, while maintaining project budgets.
  • Ensuring that all project data remains current for projects of medium size and complexity.
  • Generating comprehensive financial documentation and reports related to infrastructure, transportation, and professional services projects.
  • Collaborating with project managers on pre-billing information, cost estimates, and invoicing.
Your Contributions
  • Manage and analyze project costs and revenue, ensuring accurate profit and loss calculations.
  • Oversee lifecycle project accounting, from creating project accounts to tracking budgets and reconciling payables and receivables.
  • Conduct detailed accounting tasks related to project contracts and billing events.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to establish and update project budgets, providing recommendations as necessary.
  • Generate financial reports, identifying items that require escalation to management.
  • Authorize access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in compliance with accounting standards.
  • Maintain quality control standards for accurate financial records using accounting software and spreadsheets.
  • Investigate project variances and submit reports to management.
  • Verify contract characteristics and ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Monitor key indicators for managing problem projects and keep management informed of concerns.
  • Ensure accuracy of draft invoices and finalize approvals with Project Managers.
  • Coordinate subcontract management and evaluate subconsultant invoices.
  • Identify unpaid billings and follow up on delinquent accounts.
  • Respond to client requests for detailed project information and review all project-related billings.
  • Participate in project meetings to discuss financial status and address any issues.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects.
  • Compile information for internal and external audits as required.
  • Engage with regulatory agencies and clients professionally.
  • Stay updated on project accounting principles and practices.
  • Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as business needs arise.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in accounting and project management.
  • Knowledge of project accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong analytical skills and independent judgment in financial decision-making.
  • Ability to coordinate efforts with various stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective self-leadership and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies.
  • Willingness to travel as required for projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Oracle software is a plus.
