This role is a technical engineering position focused on the design and analysis of cutting-edge missile systems featuring advanced control mechanisms.

Responsibilities include conducting Modeling and Simulation of missile performance, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of missile systems, including acquisition and tracking sensors, propulsion, aerodynamics, GNC, and seeker performance.

Engage directly with government entities and primary contractors in the development of sophisticated air-to-air and counter-hypersonics missile systems.

Join a collaborative team environment where mentorship from industry-leading experts is a priority. The Leidos Aerophysics group thrives in a small team setting that values individual creativity and promotes continuous learning.

Utilize your missile modeling and simulation experience to design and evaluate next-generation missile systems. Leverage your skills in performing or supporting 6-DOF simulations to assess the performance of various missile technologies and system architectures.

Communicate the advantages of missile performance to stakeholders using established metrics.


Required Experience Level:

Candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of industry experience and hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a Master's degree is preferred. Candidates are expected to independently create missile system models and conduct 6-DOF analyses.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to understand overarching objectives, identify system trade-offs, and showcase the benefits of new technologies.

Significant experience with MATLAB / Simulink and/or C++ missile modeling is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in modeling divert and attitude control systems.


Communication Skills:

Effective communication with aerodynamics, airframe, and guidance/control teams is crucial. Candidates must engage daily with customers, team members, and end users, ensuring a clear understanding of customer goals and shaping work activities accordingly.

Regular verbal and written updates are expected, along with the preparation of manuscripts for technical conferences and professional journals.


Engineering Skills:
Recent experience in one or more of the following areas is required:
  • Application of 6-DOF simulation environments for missile design evaluation
  • Development of autopilots/control systems for aerodynamic or DACS-controlled missiles
  • Proficiency in MATLAB / Simulink for developing control architectures, integrating propulsion controls with missile or kill vehicle logic
  • Modeling of seekers, including EO/IR and RF seekers, encompassing gimbaled, conformal, AESA-based, and strap-down seekers

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace, Electrical, or a related Engineering or Science discipline.

Clearance:
Candidates must be U.S. Citizens with an active Secret clearance.

Desired Skills:
A Master's degree in a relevant field is preferred. Additional skills in the following areas are advantageous:
  • Scripting using Python or other languages for extensive simulations and Monte Carlo design space exploration
  • Experience with SWIL/HWIL testing for validating control software
  • Familiarity with metrics such as NEZ, F-Pole, and other air-to-air combat metrics

Understanding and ability to model seeker aperture effects, including radome aberration and distortion due to heating, is also beneficial.
