Surgical Technologist Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to join our Operating team at Hennepin County Medical Center. This 0.9 FTE role will work on-site, with a varied schedule including day, night, and every 4th weekend, as well as on-call duties.

Purpose of this position:
As a Surgical Technologist, you will perform technical skills and provide assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. You will also perform similar duties in other areas of the hospital as assigned.

Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Select instruments, equipment, and supplies for each surgical procedure.
  • Prepare the room for procedure by setting up sterile tables and checking equipment and supplies.
  • Scrubs for surgical procedures, helping the surgeon with prepping and draping patients, passing sterile instruments and supplies, and assisting with the surgical procedures, as appropriate.
  • Understand and follow the principles of sterile technique, and take steps to remedy breaks in sterile technique when observed.
  • Identify specimen before passing off the field and transport specimens to Pathology, as directed.
  • Operate specified OR equipment in the manner in which they have been trained to use it.
  • Assist RN with circulating duties, as delegated.
  • Assist with transfer of patients into or out of operating room.
  • Clean rooms, instruments, and equipment appropriately.
  • Identify and report instruments and equipment in need of maintenance.
  • Assist in teaching scrub role responsibilities to residents, nurses, and surgical technologist students.
  • Support operating room team as needed.
  • Keep up-to-date on new procedures and equipment and communicate changes to other staff.
  • Pursue professional growth and development.
