About the Role

Smithfield Foods is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the position of Gilt Selection Specialist. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for selecting high-quality gilts for breeding purposes, ensuring the health and well-being of our animals, and maintaining the highest standards of animal husbandry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Animal Selection and Vaccination
    • Select and identify high-quality gilts for breeding purposes
    • Administer vaccinations and follow established protocols to ensure animal health
  • Animal Health and Welfare
    • Evaluate the health and quality of animals and alert management to any issues
    • Ensure compliance with all environmental laws and procedures
  • Equipment Maintenance and Safety
    • Maintain equipment used in daily operations
    • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment
  • Communication and Teamwork
    • Communicate effectively with contract growers and management
    • Work collaboratively with team members to achieve common goals
Requirements
  • Education and Certifications
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
    • PQA certified
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs on a limited basis
  • Work Environment and Physical Demands
    • Must be able to frequently climb over, under, and around penning
    • Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging, and blood sampling
