Job Summary

Under the supervision of a senior technician, the Electrical Instrumentation Specialist performs skilled manual work in the repair and maintenance of plant process control equipment, power distribution systems, voice and data communication networks, including telemetry. The successful candidate will direct the work of assigned Electrical Instrument and Testing Mechanics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs the work of assigned Electrical Instrument and Testing Mechanics, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Makes estimates of material and labor required to complete work assignments, requisitions necessary materials and supplies, and maintains accurate records of time spent on jobs.
  • Performs skilled tasks in the repair, calibration, commissioning, configuration, testing, and maintenance of process instrumentation.
  • Utilizes a variety of test equipment to analyze and troubleshoot power distribution, process control, and communication systems.
  • Repairs and calibrates various instruments or analyzers used in measuring water level, precipitation, temperature, rate of flow, pH, dissolved oxygen, density, steam quality, power, air quality, vibration, proximity, cable location, and water quality.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment used in transmitting and receiving signals used for plant process control.
  • Maintains and repairs measurement sensing units.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains protective relays and portable radios.
  • Checks breakdown voltage characteristics on insulators, cables, and other circuit components.
  • Uses hand tools and equipment required for detail work common to this trade.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and five years of experience in the repair and calibration of electronic process instrumentation.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating and repair procedures of a wide variety of electric, electronic, or mechanical process instrumentation, including fiber optics and radio communication devices.
  • Considerable knowledge in testing and calibration of equipment and relays for power distribution systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the work, relating especially to low, medium, and high voltage equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of computers necessary to perform equipment configuration, maintain essential databases, and data entry to document work done and materials used, as well as to perform record keeping, prepare reports, plan, schedule, and coordinate work at several work locations in a manner conducive for the best possible use of District resources.
  • Skill in the repair and calibration of process instrumentation and automated systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Skill in the use and care of the equipment and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing in the dissemination of information and instructions.

Working Conditions

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors. Some positions require the operation of a District vehicle.
