Overview

The City of Stevens Point is currently seeking qualified candidates for the role of Firefighter/Paramedic. This position is essential for addressing emergencies and executing firefighting operations, rescue missions, hazardous materials management, and advanced life-support medical services.

Responsibilities
  1. Respond to emergency calls for fire and medical assistance, providing critical support to individuals in distress.
  2. Conduct firefighting operations including suppression, exposure protection, containment, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
  3. Ensure readiness of all facilities, vehicles, and equipment through regular inspections and maintenance.
  4. Deliver emergency medical services in accordance with departmental protocols and training.
  5. Participate in incident management as assigned.
  6. Engage in training exercises covering firefighting techniques, equipment usage, hazardous materials handling, rescue operations, and emergency medical procedures.
  7. Execute technical rescue operations in various environments, including high/low angle, confined spaces, and water rescues.
  8. Manage incidents involving hazardous materials while adhering to training guidelines.
  9. Conduct public education initiatives on fire prevention and safety, including demonstrations and instructional sessions.
  10. Perform non-emergency public service duties, such as inspections and educational outreach.
  11. Assist the public with non-emergency requests, providing information and support as needed.
  12. Maintain cleanliness and functionality of department facilities and grounds.
  13. Conduct routine maintenance on all emergency and non-emergency equipment.
  14. Carry out additional duties as required.
Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following criteria:
  1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver's License at the time of hire.
  4. U.S. citizenship required.
  5. Current CPAT Certificate (within one year of conditional job offer).
  6. National Registry Paramedic Certification or enrollment in a Paramedic program with an expected graduation date.
  7. Wisconsin Firefighter 1 certification or equivalent.
  8. Wisconsin Firefighter 2 certification or equivalent within one year of hire.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to operate a respirator, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
  • Capability to distinguish colors in accordance with NFPA standards.
  • Proficient in driving and operating fire apparatus and ambulances.
  • Familiarity with local streets, addresses, and water supply systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of firefighting techniques and emergency procedures.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong record-keeping abilities and proficiency with modern technology.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and departmental policies.
  • Capacity to build effective relationships with colleagues and the community.
  • Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks in high-pressure situations.
  • Commitment to maintaining required certifications and licenses.
  • Understanding of evidence preservation at fire scenes.
  • Thorough knowledge of firefighting tools and equipment maintenance.
