Position Overview

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) is at the forefront of innovative concepts and data related to current and future systems, delivering cutting-edge research and development; technical assessments during the acquisition phase; and comprehensive design, assembly, integration, testing, and operational support. Our team, primarily composed of highly skilled mechanical and aerospace engineers, offers national expertise in vehicle engineering, guidance, navigation, controls, robotics, electro-mechanical devices, embedded systems, fluid mechanics, propulsion, thermal control, orbital mechanics, mechanisms, structures, structural dynamics, and dynamic environments.

The Thermal Control Department consists of seasoned engineers with extensive knowledge in the design and analysis of spacecraft thermal control systems at both component and system levels. This department conducts technical studies, experimental investigations, and real-time assessments to guide critical decisions made by our clients and their contractors.

We are seeking a Manager - Spacecraft Thermal Engineering to oversee the Thermal Design and Analysis Section within the Thermal Control Department. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in heat transfer and thermal engineering, specifically as it pertains to space systems, along with direct experience in thermal design and analysis of spacecraft. The successful candidate will support both classified and unclassified spacecraft initiatives, with a focus on classified systems. They will lead, equip, and mentor a team while advocating for optimal solutions, best practices, and innovative approaches in the thermal design discipline across the space sector, both within and outside Aerospace.

Work Model

This is a full-time role offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite workdays with remote flexibility as business needs dictate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Thermal Design and Analysis section, ensuring the delivery of precise and timely thermal models and analysis results for space vehicle and payload programs, including ownership of essential thermal software and tools.
  • Strategically plan and manage the training, development, and daily operations of a team of 4-7 engineers, including hiring, training, performance reviews, and promoting professional growth.
  • Ensure the relevance, quality, and integrity of technical products generated by the section while adhering to schedule and budget constraints.
  • Enhance the section's technical capabilities by developing or adopting new analytical or laboratory tools and improving knowledge management within the organization.
  • Encourage research and development activities to foster innovation.
  • Increase support and influence with existing and new clients while facilitating collaboration between section staff, department personnel, and across Aerospace.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a closely related field with a focus on heat transfer or thermal sciences.
  • A minimum of five years of thermal engineering experience.
  • Experience in analyzing and designing spaceflight thermal control systems across all relevant modes of heat transfer and throughout all phases of the program lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated initiative and strong leadership skills, with a proven ability to build and manage effective engineering teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with various levels of corporate staff, peers, management, program offices, clients, and contractors.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to client or contractor facilities.
  • This position requires a current and active Secret security clearance issued by the U.S. government. The ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess:

  • An advanced degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a closely related field.
  • Over eight years of thermal engineering experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, and at least one commercial thermal FEA software tool.
  • Experience in thermal analysis code and algorithm development.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary thermal analysis areas.
  • Deep knowledge of thermodynamics, cryogenics, and two-phase thermophysics.
  • Experience in adjacent engineering disciplines for spaceflight hardware.
  • Experience leading projects focused on innovation, research, and development.
  • A current and active TS/SCI clearance.
