Job SummaryThe Behavioral Health Nurse is responsible for providing and coordinating safe, effective individualized nursing care to patients. This includes nursing interventions, case finding, health teaching/counseling, and provision of supportive and/or restorative care. The nurse will also participate in staff training, prepare clinical and administrative reports, maintain infection control standards, and function as a member of a treatment team.
Key Responsibilities- Identify, plan, and care for the total needs of patients, taking into consideration age-specific needs.
- Perform initial and ongoing assessment/data collection, including biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and discharge planning factors.
- Formulate an individualized plan of care based on patient-assessed psychiatric needs, desired outcomes, and age-related requirements.
- Implement care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and safe manner, based on established patient and nursing practice standards.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care and revise interventions as necessary.
- Document all nursing assessments, treatments, medications, tolerance to procedures, changes in condition, interventions, and patient outcomes.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate educational services/programs for patients.
- Make timely decisions in crisis or emergency behavioral health situations.
- Run groups related to medication management, diabetes education, and other modalities.
- Perform and/or direct cardio-pulmonary resuscitation activities.
- Operate equipment safely and necessary for providing patient care in assigned clinical areas.
- Work and communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
- Provide general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other levels of nursing staff.
- Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain license two weeks prior to starting employment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain certification prior to starting employment.
- One to five years of acute care experience and psychiatry.
- Psychiatric Nursing certification or other specialty certification.
