Position Overview:
The Health & Safety Specialist/Coordinator plays a crucial role in managing the facility's health and safety standards, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position is instrumental in fostering a proactive safety culture and enhancing the facility's safety and health programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain the site's health and safety procedures and programs.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
- Conduct incident investigations, track data, and implement corrective measures.
- Execute the site emergency action plan and response protocols.
- Perform facility safety inspections and monitor daily operations for safety compliance.
- Design and deliver safety and health training, including HAZWOPER training.
- Report on corporate and site safety metrics.
- Conduct basic industrial hygiene monitoring.
- Facilitate monthly safety committee meetings.
- Manage the Workers' Compensation program.
- Implement behavior-based safety initiatives.
- Maintain OSHA logs as per regulations.
- Oversee the contractor safety program.
- Conduct job safety analyses and assign appropriate PPE.
- Manage the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database.
- Collaborate with supervisors, managers, and operations personnel to ensure a safe working environment.
- Work alongside EHS counterparts at other Veolia facilities.
- Address day-to-day health and safety concerns.
Work Environment:
This role involves a balance of fieldwork (50%) and office tasks (50%). Candidates must be prepared to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions, and around hazardous materials. Certain tasks may require the use of respirators and fall protection equipment. Physical demands include frequent bending, climbing, and carrying, as well as the use of hand tools and lifting heavy objects. Candidates should be comfortable working from heights and in confined spaces.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field is preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in the hazardous waste industry is advantageous.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in writing reports and policies related to health and safety.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
- A solid understanding of OSHA regulations is critical; knowledge of DOT and EPA regulations is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Candidates should be capable of standing and walking for extended periods, climbing ladders, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google applications is required.
