Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Driver Mentor to join our team at Southeastern Freight Lines. As a Driver Mentor, you will play a critical role in enhancing the training of new Company drivers, ensuring a safe and productive work environment that aligns with our company culture and policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide in-truck training to newly hired drivers and Driver Trainees, focusing on proficiency in route management, stop management, daily driver responsibilities, Smith System of Defensive Driving, and injury prevention.
  • Train new drivers in the operation of In Cab mobile devices, Laser Systems, Samsara logs, security, customer service, proper handling of Bills of Lading (BOL) and Delivery Receipts (DR), call-in procedures, lunch and delay times.
  • Cover essential topics with new drivers, including dress and appearance, clock-in procedures, check-in procedures at the beginning of the day, obtaining needed supplies, trailer audits, pre-trip route planning, vehicle assignments, pre-trip inspections, yard rules, and yard layouts for service centers.
  • Ensure new drivers understand the duties associated with returning to the service center at the end of the day, including check-in procedures, door assignments, turning in bills, fueling tractors, proper parking in yards, vehicle security, extra dispatches, handling returned freight, post-trip inspections, and vehicle inspection reports.
  • Provide guidance and answer questions from new drivers, perform necessary check rides to ensure safe driving and procedural compliance, and assist with driver orientation, ELDT, and classroom training.
  • Fulfill P&D leader responsibilities as needed, including filling in for absent leaders.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 6 months driving experience, with 2 years preferred.
  • A High School Diploma or GED.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for HAZMAT, Tanker, and Twin Trailers, with no automatic restrictions.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write in English, perform simple mathematical calculations, handle receipts, read maps and road signs, and maintain driving logs.
  • Detailed knowledge of and compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, regulations, and guidelines, including those governing safe driving, hours of service, vehicle inspections, and the transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Meeting DOT physical qualifications and passing alcohol and drug tests are mandatory requirements for this role.
