Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled MRI Technologist to join our team at Lifespan. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating a MRI unit and related equipment to produce high-quality MR images of various anatomical areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate MRI unit and related equipment to produce high-quality MR images
  • Collect and complete records on patient data and equipment operation
  • Provide assistance to patients and radiologists
  • Solve minor equipment problems and perform calibration tests and quality control functions
  • Prepare and calibrate the MRI unit for daily operation
  • Select proper technical factors on an individual patient basis
  • Screen all patients and visitors prior to entry into the magnetic imaging area
  • Appraise physical condition of all patients to determine durability to withstand the procedure
  • Verify and/or obtain informed consent for examinations requiring consent
  • Record and maintain patient history from the patient's chart, referring physician, and/or by interviewing the patient
  • Position patients for imaging to obtain satisfactory examinations and perform requested procedures
  • Protect and immobilize patient in accordance with prescribed safety standards
  • Utilize a wide variety of technical equipment, including computers, radio frequency generators, gradient coils, multi-format cameras, film processors, and other miscellaneous equipment to produce MRI images
  • Perform complex imaging of cross-sectional, sagittal, coronal, and obliquely generated MRI images
  • Prepare and label films to be interpreted by the radiologist
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Assist the radiologist in developing new procedures
  • Assist in development of technical factors and film selection
  • Participate in in-service education programs for technical staff and other hospital support groups
  • Participate in clinical instruction and supervision of radiological students
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the latest developments in the MRI field
  • Maintain knowledge of nursing procedures, such as sterile techniques and infection control
  • Observe established departmental policies, as well as state, local, and federal regulations
  • Maintain ethical conduct with all medical and non-medical personnel
  • Maintain a working area in a clean and orderly condition
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and/or required
  • Understand and practice ALARA principles of Radiation Protection, including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters
  • Understand and practice principles of safety with regards to strong magnetic fields, as those generated by MRI systems
Requirements
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification
  • MRI (ARRT MR) certification within 24 months of employment in classification
  • Current BLS certification
  • Two years formal training in an approved School of Radiological Technology required
  • Registration through the American Registry for Radiological Technologists
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process
  • Basic understanding of the operation of computer consoles
  • In-depth knowledge of the MRI equipment, in order to analyze equipment problems and arrange for its repair
  • The interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with patients, patient's families, departmental staff, physicians, and others
Experience
  • Six months experience as a Radiologic Technologist in a hospital radiology department, plus six months specialized training in the operation of the MRI unit
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Exposure to high magnetic fields
  • Individual cannot have any physical condition that would be aggravated by magnetic fields
  • May be in contact with patients with communicable diseases
  • May be in contact with chemicals from automatic film processors
  • May be exposed to radiation
  • Ability to lift and move patients to and from examining table, transport patients in wheelchairs and/or stretchers, and to lift and carry cassettes
