ABOUT THE ROLE
This role involves collaborating within a dynamic team to construct crates and package fine art pieces in an industrial setting, ensuring timely shipping. Candidates should possess knowledge and experience in carpentry, woodworking, material handling, packing, crating, and artwork installation.
Requirements:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Carpentry and Crate Fabrication
- Build a variety of custom pallets, plywood containers, crate panels, and bases utilizing various tools and carpentry methods.
- Safely operate and maintain proficiency with essential carpentry equipment, including saws, drills, routers, and sanders.
- Assist in assembling custom, reinforced cardboard containers for the secure shipping of artwork and related hardware.
- Apply protective padding to artwork support structures and occasionally weatherproof using heat shrink materials.
- Prepare metal components for shipping by removing imperfections such as burrs, rust, and oil.
Art Handling and Equipment Operation
- Support the de-installation of completed artworks by adhering to established protocols.
- Assist in the safe transportation of custom artworks using forklifts or other lifting devices, following safe rigging practices and documenting lifting techniques.
- Under general supervision, handle and package artworks according to their materials and finishes. Over time, develop an understanding of various finishes including patinated and painted bronze, polished stainless steel, gold and palladium leaf, hardwoods, resin, and other specialized materials.
- Operate large machinery, including various lifts (forklift, boom lift, telehandler, etc.), trailers, and box trucks.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in inspecting artworks for any imperfections or inconsistencies.
- Paint, weigh, label, and stamp crates, pallets, and boxes in compliance with domestic and international shipping regulations.
- Perform basic maintenance on equipment and may assist with facility upkeep and improvement projects as needed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including wearing required personal protective equipment and prioritizing safety in all job functions.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, practicing good housekeeping.
- Other duties as assigned.
