This position is open to current permanent employees of the Department of the Interior, individuals eligible under the Land Management Workforce Act, former Public Land Corps employees, and those eligible under VEOA and CTAP.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Park Ranger Supervisor, you will oversee daily operations and manage the execution of additional responsibilities related to training and leadership. Your role will involve supervising GL-9 permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers, non-commissioned personnel, and park volunteers. You will be responsible for detecting criminal activities, investigating violations, and making custodial arrests. This includes preparing and executing warrants, interviewing witnesses, and detaining suspects, while ensuring thorough written reports are completed.

You will establish work objectives and guarantee that all team members receive necessary training promptly. Additionally, you will identify operational needs and provide recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and operational evaluations. Scheduling patrols to enhance visitor engagement, particularly in sensitive areas, will also be part of your duties.

Your leadership will extend to complex law enforcement operations, emergency medical services, and search and rescue missions, ensuring the safety of park visitors and residents. Furthermore, you will engage in all facets of employee management, including performance evaluations, recognition programs, and counseling.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • Possession of a Type II or higher Law Enforcement Commission is mandatory.
  • New employees must set up direct deposit for payroll within 30 days of starting.
  • Individuals currently in a General Schedule position must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Must carry a firearm while on duty and maintain proficiency.
  • Must have no domestic violence convictions; successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • Drug testing is required prior to appointment and may include random testing during employment.

Physical and Medical Requirements

  • Selected candidates must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform demanding duties and pass a medical examination.
  • Periodic medical evaluations will be required throughout employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and submit a driving record.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is mandatory.
  • Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is expected.
  • New employees may need to complete a probationary period.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Credit will be given for all relevant experience, including volunteer work. Education and Certification

Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a valid Type II or higher National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission by the specified date. Successful completion of accredited training is required for commissioning.
