Description
The Nurse Practice Specialist serves as the clinical and educational leader for a designated program or area of nursing practice.
This role involves providing leadership to integrate new knowledge and innovations within a specialty area, ensuring that healthcare delivery is safe, timely, effective, evidence-based, equitable, efficient, and centered around patients and families. The specialist collaborates interprofessionally, offering expert consultation to administrative leaders, educators, nurses, and physicians to enhance clinical practice and promote quality improvement aimed at improving patient and population health outcomes.
The Nurse Practice Specialist contributes to the advancement of nursing practice at various levels, including unit, system, local, state, national, and international. This role is crucial in applying and leading the Professional Practice/Care Transformation Model across the health system. Participation in and leadership of organizational and hospital-based professional activities is essential to maintain and enhance knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
Additionally, the specialist directs and manages process improvement projects and initiatives that align with the strategic plan for innovation in healthcare, interpreting results, disseminating findings, and utilizing technology and clinical and operational data to enhance patient-centered care.
In this role, the Nurse Practice Specialist influences and guides direct care for complex patients with multifaceted issues, addressing their biophysical, psycho-emotional, and spiritual needs at both individual and community levels. Evaluation of all processes is conducted to ensure effective implementation and outcomes that meet patient goals and optimize care delivery.

The Nurse Practice Specialist provides guidance in:
- Enhancing the health of individuals, families, and communities by preparing nurses and other healthcare team members to recognize social determinants of health and identify system facilitators and barriers to delivering effective, efficient, equitable, and accessible care across the continuum.
- Considering cultural influences and being aware of the diverse needs of patients, families, staff, and other professionals.
Demonstrating leadership in ethical decision-making and patient advocacy is vital. The specialist engages in ongoing self-appraisal, seeking feedback from colleagues, other professionals, patients, and families. Implementation of principles of fair and just culture is essential, utilizing coaching to foster optimally functioning staff and multidisciplinary teams through advanced communication skills. Mentorship and coaching for professional development, including collaboration with resident nurses on evidence-based projects, are also key responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Professional Nursing Certification required (CCRN, CEN, OCN, etc.)
- Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and three years of clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two years of recent experience in the area of concentration.
- BLS and ACLS certifications required.
