Job Description

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Landscape Design Division as a Spring 2024 Intern.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience in specialized landscaping design, installation, and management of all City landscaped areas. You will work closely with our team to develop and implement efficient and sustainable landscape beds, utilizing native plants, storm-water/drainage, irrigation systems, and reducing invasive species in parks and on citywide municipal grounds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain landscaped and designated specialized planting and natural areas within parks, around municipal facilities, and city gateways.
  • Assist with facilitating extensive landscape designs, drawings, and concepts, and coordinate the implementation and maintenance of the designs.
  • Conduct tree and plant risk assessments, evaluate bed and landscape canopy, and evaluate urban heat island effects and remedies in plantings.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to service requests and inquiries, and address customer service-related concerns as assigned.
  • Assist and participate in providing logistical support for City-sponsored functions and special events.

Requirements:

  • Requires college-level coursework in Landscaping or Horticulture.
  • Must be a college student in good academic standing or a recent college graduate (i.e., within one year of graduation).

Preferred Qualifications: College-level coursework in Landscaping or Horticulture.
