The Oncology Unit, recently reopened, features 16 beds dedicated to patients with diverse cancer diagnoses. Nurses in this unit maintain a 1:5 patient ratio and are experts in chemotherapy administration. Our collaborative team, consisting of oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, and support personnel, is not only highly skilled but also deeply compassionate, committed to providing specialized nursing care for cancer patients. We strive to create an optimal healing environment for each patient and their families throughout their unique journeys.
Key Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates, and delivers high-quality, compassionate care by upholding professional nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Provides leadership to team members by clearly articulating and delegating expected care standards, supervising, and encouraging their contributions. Oversees LPNs, PCAs, and other non-licensed staff.
- Conducts comprehensive assessments of each assigned patient upon admission and continuously thereafter, considering physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural needs, as well as pain management, nutritional status, and discharge planning.
- Develops, implements, and documents educational plans for patients and significant others, tailored to their physical, behavioral, psychological, and developmental needs, while identifying barriers to learning.
- Regularly evaluates patient care and coordinates care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assigns and delegates nursing responsibilities to team members based on patient needs and team capabilities.
- Implements safety protocols during care delivery and accurately documents observations, care provided, and modifications to care plans.
- Participates in transition rounds, care planning, problem identification, and team shift reports.
- Engages in performance improvement initiatives by serving on relevant teams, assisting with performance measures, and supporting necessary changes for enhancement.
- Completes initial and annual competency assessments as required by job classification.
- Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards as outlined in performance evaluations.
- Adheres to compliance requirements as detailed in the Employee Handbook.
- Must uphold DCH Behavioral Standards, fostering positive relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and oneself.
- Utilizes electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management systems, and intranet as necessary.
- Must comply with all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Performs all other assigned duties.
Must possess a current Alabama RN license. Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training from the American Heart Association is required. Professional Nursing Certification is preferred. Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English is essential.
