Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police, the Law Enforcement Officer acts as a primary responder, investigator, and security personnel for all properties under the jurisdiction of the Tennessee Board of Regents. This role encompasses the management of both criminal and non-criminal inquiries, documentation, traffic management, safety protocols, and overall security for the institutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Safeguard life and property across all Tennessee Board of Regents controlled properties.
- Conduct thorough investigations, both criminal and non-criminal, from initiation to resolution; prepare comprehensive reports for review by institutional leadership and external agencies.
- Respond to emergency situations with a law enforcement approach.
- Carry out investigations related to safety and incidents of illness or injury.
- Provide a professional law enforcement response to emergencies in accordance with training and applicable laws.
- Interpret and enforce federal and state laws relevant to educational institutions.
- Apprehend individuals committing offenses.
- Testify in state courts and administrative hearings as required.
- Perform regular inspections of equipment, facilities, and safety measures.
- Enforce parking regulations and manage traffic services.
- Offer escorts to buildings and vehicles upon request from faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
- Provide assistance with vehicles as needed.
- Execute essential tasks including data entry and documentation.
- Foster and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence and servant leadership principles.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the chief of police or deputy chief of police.
- Collaborate closely with institutional leadership to align daily responsibilities with safety and security objectives.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to achieve Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) certification within six months of hire; or possess current P.O.S.T. certification.
- Must meet physical, moral, and psychological standards to fulfill the requirements of a Peace Officer in Tennessee.
- Willingness to work varied shifts, including holidays and across multiple locations as necessary.
- Current Tennessee P.O.S.T. Certification.
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Experience in law enforcement or campus security.
- Conversational or fluent proficiency in a second language.
- Proficient in technology including MS Office Suite, videoconferencing tools, and digital records management systems.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships with students, faculty, and the public.
- Capability to perform under pressure in high-stress situations.
- Strong writing skills.
- Proficient in operating law enforcement equipment.
- Understanding of state and federal laws applicable to campus policing.
- Basic knowledge of accident investigation processes in relation to relevant laws.
