Job Title: Histology Technician

At Advocate Health, we are seeking a skilled Histology Technician to join our team. As a Histology Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of tissue samples for diagnostic purposes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accession, label, and prepare tissue specimens for testing
  • Cut high-quality tissue sections with precise thickness and place them on glass slides
  • Embed tissue in paraffin blocks and maintain a filing system for blocks, slides, and wet tissue
  • Process tissue using processors to ensure preservation and infiltration by paraffin
  • Perform routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and distribution of slides
  • Manage daily workflow for recuts, special stains, immunohistochemistry, control slides, and send-outs according to established protocols
  • Evaluate quality control results and take corrective action under the guidance of key operators, technical specialists, or supervisor
  • Perform and document cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment
  • Assist pathologists during frozen section procedures
  • Ensure compliance with accrediting agency standards
Requirements:
  • Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)
  • Advanced training beyond High School in Biology or related field
  • No experience required
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of human anatomy
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to safely handle sharp instruments
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Problem-solving skills
Working Conditions:

This position requires sitting and standing for extended periods, as well as walking, lifting, squatting, bending, and twisting. The incumbent may be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive, and infectious agents. They must wear appropriate lab attire, including gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed.
