POSITION OVERVIEW

The Environmental Compliance Specialist will be engaged in significant industrial operations, including refineries, chemical manufacturing, and oil & gas sectors. The main focus will be on the daily development, execution, and enhancement of environmental initiatives pertinent to refinery processes. Key responsibilities will encompass greenhouse gas emissions monitoring, benzene waste management, leak detection and repair, as well as adherence to clean air regulations. The objective of this role is to establish and deliver a premier, industry-leading environmental program at a client site, supported by experienced consulting and field teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, execute, and refine processes to ensure compliance with environmental permits and regulations related to refinery activities. This necessitates the ability to interpret intricate technical, legal, and regulatory documentation.
  • Conduct detailed emission calculations to facilitate permit submissions, meet regulatory obligations, and perform health risk evaluations.
  • Interpret P&IDs to identify process equipment, including vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and flow directions.
  • Gather and maintain environmental data records to monitor compliance metrics.
  • Engage in technical negotiations with a diverse range of stakeholders (e.g., regulatory agencies, contractors, internal teams) with guidance from senior environmental personnel. This includes managing ongoing compliance discussions with relevant agencies through effective verbal and written communication.
  • Contribute to the development of new regulations by coordinating technical and regulatory efforts with multiple stakeholders.
  • Participate in agency inspections and compliance/enforcement activities.
  • Engage in internal and external regulatory audits.
  • Encourage the identification and advancement of environmental initiatives within the organization.
  • Stay informed about emerging environmental regulations and assess their implications for the business.
  • Utilize technical expertise and leadership abilities to ensure refinery compliance and resolve issues.
  • Manage various tasks with differing timelines and stakeholder involvement.
  • Develop a comprehensive skill set to support the environmental team.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related scientific discipline is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in industrial settings is preferred, with refinery experience being advantageous.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Effective communication skills are essential, including the ability to speak clearly and understand conversations.

Regular physical activities may include typing, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and walking for extended periods.

Manual dexterity is required for typing and using a mouse.

Visual abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position may involve lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and ascending heights of up to 300 feet.

Travel expectations are minimal, at less than 25% for the initial months.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to apply common sense reasoning to effectively communicate with clients and relay information to the appropriate team members.

Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations and interpret data.

Language skills to read and interpret safety regulations, operating instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as to write routine reports and effectively communicate with groups.

SALARY RANGE

$70,000 - $120,000
