Job Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the operation of various types of machinery and vehicles utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair tasks. This role involves handling specialized and oversized equipment for tasks such as excavation around active utility lines, installation of hand holes and terminals, and assisting with horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crews. The operator will engage in activities that include operating earthmoving machinery, specialty equipment, and forklifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate machinery to minimize risks of injury and property damage.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections and maintenance checks on equipment.
  • Ensure secure storage of all machinery.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance, reporting any defects to supervisors.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols.
  • Manage inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist HDD crews with digging and hoisting tasks using mini excavators.
  • Follow all safety and security standards in performing duties.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • 8-10 years of experience operating Excavators, Backhoes, and Forklifts.
  • Possession of a TWIC card.

Essential Skills:

  • Technical proficiency in operating heavy machinery.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in tasks.
  • Strong customer/client focus.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle inspection and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and enforce safety procedures.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform various physical activities, including walking, standing, and lifting.
  • Occasional stair climbing and bending.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling tools and equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and outdoor conditions.
  • Clean driving record and background check required for operating company vehicles.

Additional Information:

  • Willingness to travel to job sites as necessary.
  • Must pass Safety Council courses.
  • Compliance with company policies and drug testing regulations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.
