Role Summary:
The Patient Care Technician plays a vital role in delivering direct patient care under the supervision of the unit manager and healthcare professionals. This position is centered around addressing the needs of patients in a compassionate and efficient manner.
General Patient Care Responsibilities: The technician ensures the comfort and hygiene of patients by providing essential care services. This includes assisting with bathing, oral hygiene, hair care, and changing linens. Responsibilities also encompass meal distribution, vital signs monitoring, and specimen collection.
Technical Support Duties: The technician aids in executing patient tests and treatment protocols, which includes setting up IV lines, performing 12-lead ECGs, and conducting basic tracheostomy care. Additional tasks involve dressing changes, performing CPR, and obtaining cultures as necessary.
Equipment Assistance: The technician supports physicians and healthcare staff by preparing and supplying necessary equipment for patient care.
Patient Transport: Assisting in the mobility of patients using assistive devices, the technician plays a key role in patient transfers and ambulation.
Communication and Documentation: The technician is responsible for accurate documentation and effective communication to meet the needs of patients and their families while adhering to regulatory standards. Maintaining confidentiality of patient information is paramount.
Quality Improvement: The technician utilizes resources efficiently to enhance quality outcomes and manage costs effectively.
Qualifications:
Education:

Experience:
Required: Less than one year of relevant experience
Preferred: 1-2 years of relevant experience
Licensure/Certifications:

Certified Nurse Assistant
CPR Certification
Additional Requirements: Completion of a Nursing Assistant Program with verification on the Illinois Department of Health Nurse Aide Registry or an equivalent educational background in a clinically focused program is necessary. Previous Patient Care Technicians at Loyola University Health System prior to 1997 are exempt from these guidelines and are integrated into the Patient Care Technician roles following successful completion of an in-house orientation and training program.
