Instructors are responsible for delivering educational content in reading and writing, aligned with high school credit competencies, including subjects such as US history, health, fine arts, WA state history, life sciences, and contemporary issues, or pre-college mathematics, covering topics from basic arithmetic to linear functions. The ABE department is dedicated to supporting part-time faculty. They will have access to the ABE department's Open Educational Resources (OER) curriculum and teaching materials. Additionally, part-time faculty will receive support from full-time faculty, the department chair, and ABE navigator. Faculty members are encouraged to participate in departmental meetings and training sessions, although attendance is not mandatory. Opportunities for teaching may be available during the day, evening, in hybrid formats, and online.
Required Qualifications
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in Adult Education, English, Composition, Literacy, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Experience in teaching pre-college reading and writing or pre-college mathematics.
- Experience working with historically underserved or educationally disadvantaged groups.
- Experience (or willingness to gain experience) in online course development and instruction.
- Inspiring enthusiasm and engagement in ABE instruction.
- Creating an inclusive environment that promotes equity and multicultural awareness.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with diverse audiences.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate students from various backgrounds and abilities.
- Experience in collaboratively and independently developing or modifying curriculum.
- Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, staff, students, and administrators from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, learning management systems, and other relevant instructional technologies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The College operates in a mixed instructional format (both in-person and online), with some positions potentially being fully online based on program needs. For remote instruction, faculty are required to have their own workspace and internet access, while the College will provide necessary technical support and equipment. For on-campus instruction, work is typically conducted in a classroom or office setting, requiring extended periods of standing or sitting. Faculty commonly utilize computers and media equipment in their work.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/COMPENSATION:
This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter position. Compensation is based on the number of contact hours as outlined in the agreement with the Shoreline Community College Federation of Teachers. Hiring for this role is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.

PART-TIME FACULTY POSITIONS
A part-time faculty member becomes eligible for benefits at the beginning of the second consecutive quarter of half-time or more employment at one or more Washington state institutions of higher education. Spring and fall quarters are considered consecutive quarters for benefits eligibility. Half-time is determined based on each institution's definition of full-time.
A part-time faculty member must qualify each quarter they teach to maintain eligibility. Once eligible, part-time faculty will be notified of their benefit and retirement options.
