Job Summary

This part-time, hourly position reports to the Director of Exhibitions, Programming, and Public Engagement at Barnard College. The Graduate Assistant will work alongside the Director to prepare, develop, and execute exhibition projects.

About the Position

The Graduate Assistant will attend meetings with exhibiting artists, assess and research materials needed for installations, and participate in coordination as a core member of the installation and de-installation team. They will engage in a range of other in-depth activities around exhibitions, including designing and developing signage and wayfinding, exhibit text, and outreach materials for each exhibition.

About the Milstein Exhibitions Program

The Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning serves as an academic hub in the heart of the Barnard College campus. The program seeks to develop and facilitate exhibitions that stimulate interdisciplinary conversations, engage with contemporary issues, and invite the participation of viewers and community members from the larger community beyond the university.

Requirements
  • Current enrollment in a graduate program is required.
  • The ideal candidate will make a commitment to work from September through May, up to 8-9 hours of work per week, with increased hours during weeks when special events or installations are scheduled.
  • Preferred demonstrable skills include excellent organizational, research, and communication skills, a demonstrated interest in critical studies of art, art history, public history, digital humanities, science and technology, media studies, performance studies, or other related fields, experience with art installation, industrial design, or the creation of exhibitions and art display, graphic design experience, and fluency with Creative Suite apps and other design software.
