We are seeking a highly skilled Orthoptist to join our team at Arkansas Children's Hospital. As an Orthoptist, you will play a critical role in evaluating and managing childhood and adult eye movement abnormalities under the direction of an ophthalmologist.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate and manage childhood and adult eye movement abnormalities
- Participate in the education of orthoptic students, medical students, ophthalmology residents, and other health professionals
- Aid staff, residents, and outside ophthalmologists in the examination and treatment of patients with disorders of ocular motility and binocular vision
- Analyze examination results and plan and execute therapy in collaboration with the ophthalmologist
- Assess visual acuity in patients with amblyopia, patients who are non-verbal, are uncooperative, or have developmental delay
- Perform quantitative measurements, ocular sensory testing, and diagnostic strabismus evaluations
- Review patient medical records prior to clinic visits to anticipate patient needs
- Complete orthoptic exams in a timely manner and provide documentation to pediatric ophthalmologists about results and notes changes from previous visits
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision or abnormal eye movements
- Examine patients with problems related to ocular motility, binocular vision, amblyopia, or strabismus
- Assist ophthalmologists in planning and modifying plans of care based on assessment data
- Initiate orthoptic therapy in selected cases, including eye motility exercises
- Implement plans that include prismatic and other orthoptic methods for the treatment of diplopia
- Educate patients and families through verbal or written explanations and document responses in medical records
- Advance orthoptic treatment as indicated by patient progress and in consultation with ophthalmologists
- Provide training related to clinical methods or orthoptics to students, resident physicians, or other health professionals
