The Correctional RN plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of the incarcerated population. Collaborating with healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and administrators, this nurse utilizes their knowledge to address the unique challenges of the correctional environment while providing high-quality care to their patient population. This care includes both routine and emergency health services in a correctional facility setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Perform focused interviews to identify specific patient needs.
  • Assess signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition.
  • Conduct health histories on newly-admitted inmates.
  • Make referrals to staff physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, or mental health professionals when necessary.
  • Determine the need for emergency hospital care and ensure that all medication is administered in accordance with standard operating procedures and as ordered by the authorizing authority.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data and information from healthcare members and document actual and/or potential nursing diagnoses.
  • Document the patient's plan of care using identified nursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursing interventions.
  • Identify and prioritize actions based on patient care requirements.
  • Monitor consistency between patient plan of care and actions of medical staff.
  • Perform interventions according to identified priorities, plan of care, and hospital policies and patient care outcome standards.
  • Initiate and evaluate patient education.
  • Revises the plan of care according to evaluation, changes in medical plan of care, and effective/ineffective nursing interventions.
  • Document patient's response to nursing and other interventions.
  • Supervise, train, and direct other healthcare professionals on site, such as LPNs, CNAs, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
Requirements:
  • Current Registered Nurse License for the state in which the nurse practices.
  • Minimum of one year of correctional healthcare experience preferred.
  • Comply with all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable.
  • Current CPR if applicable.
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation).
  • Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site.
  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required.
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
