Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and ensure the quality, quantity, and reliability of laboratory support staff under the direction of the CLIA License holder.
  • Relate laboratory services to the medical staff and patients, assessing laboratory needs and utilization, and exploring sources and methods to meet that utilization.
  • Assure compliance with all Consortium-wide policies, outside regulatory policies, and agencies such as HIPAA, JC, CLIA, Client, and OSHA.
  • Maintain lab policy and procedure manuals, and work with the LIS coordinator to maintain the lab LIS system.
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, review, and assure compliance with all laboratory quality control, proficiency testing, quality assurance, safety, accreditation, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrument and laboratory system failures.
  • Perform specimen collection and lab testing in all areas of the clinical laboratory, and routinely review patient reports to assure accuracy.
  • Serve as a laboratory resource for all departments, and work with the laboratory director to monitor operational costs and develop laboratory budgets.
  • Develop and monitor ongoing continuing education for lab and nursing personnel performing waived testing, and address concerns of internal and external customers.
Position Complexities:

Working with and at the direction of the CLIA License holder, ensure the lab meets all regulatory requirements set forth by CLIA, CMS, and Client.

Takes direction from and defers to CLIA License holder to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and must be proficient in all laboratory systems and tests to cover during periods of staffing shortage.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related sciences and minimum of 4 years of experience.
  • Associates in Medical Laboratory technology and a minimum of 6 years of experience.
Certification:
  • National laboratory certification - ASCP or equivalent.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift >50 pounds, stand, stoop, and bend over for extended periods. Position has potential exposure to biohazards on a routine basis.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical laboratory and health care regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory sciences.
  • Working knowledge of other departmental processes.
  • Competent phlebotomy and technical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Advanced computer use skills.
  • Advanced ability to multi-task.
  • Advanced ability for analytical thinking and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced ability to lead personnel.
