Position Overview:
The Surgical Services RN Coordinator is accountable for the organization, direction, and management of the daily operating room schedule, ensuring high-quality service for perioperative patients. This role requires effective communication with medical personnel, interdepartmental teams, and operating room staff to facilitate smooth schedule progression and resolve any arising issues.

Qualifications:
Educational Background:
A College Diploma in Nursing is required. Carle Health encourages the pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in the future, offering various resources to support your educational advancement and professional growth within the nursing field. Completing a BSN will also enable progression within our clinical ladder program.

Licensure and Certification:
A valid Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License is required upon hire, along with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of employment.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of experience related to the specific patient population is necessary.

Additional Requirements:

  • Familiarity with standard equipment necessary for performing essential job functions.
  • Occasional travel to other facilities may be required.
  • Must be able to drive a personal vehicle for business purposes.

Skills and Knowledge:
Proficiency in reading, writing, comprehending, and speaking fluent English is essential. Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browsing, are required. Candidates should demonstrate multicultural sensitivity and possess critical thinking abilities to make independent decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the daily surgical schedule, including case assignments, room allocations, and personnel assignments. Take charge of the Surgery, Sterilization, and Endoscopy Departments in the absence of the Manager.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of operating rooms by coordinating the surgical schedule and monitoring case progression to anticipate potential changes.
  • Assign and supervise the use of personnel and facilities, including organizing lunch and break relief for intraoperative staff.
  • Collaborate with the charge anesthesiologist to maintain an efficient schedule in line with established policies and protocols.
  • Provide leadership and support to staff to meet departmental objectives and ensure timely completion of assignments.
  • Act as a resource for clinical care issues across all areas and promote the department's services to physicians.
  • Foster positive relationships with physicians and colleagues to maintain a collaborative work environment.
  • Monitor and coordinate the use of specialized equipment and evaluate patient care standards in the operating room, recommending necessary changes to uphold nursing care quality.
  • Manage staff work and vacation schedules to ensure adequate coverage for the surgical caseload.
  • Supervise and assist various specialty Lead RNs as required, ensuring productivity through appropriate staffing levels and accountability.
  • Be available for phone consultations and act as a liaison for the surgery department during off-hours to assist with scheduling and employee matters.

Administrative Duties:
Organize, develop, implement, and adjust scheduling and administration programs in alignment with facility goals and objectives, in collaboration with the ADSS. Work with the Education Coordinator to identify staff development needs related to scheduling and administration.

Participate actively in departmental meetings and committees to enhance professional practice, problem-solving, and innovation. Attend in-service programs and seminars to improve knowledge in scheduling management and clinical practices.

Ensure compliance with unit standards, policies, and procedures, and provide guidance on the correct handling of supplies and equipment to ensure their proper functioning. Monitor nursing practices, aseptic techniques, and infection control procedures.

Coordinate participation in mandatory in-service education for staff, including topics such as Fire Safety, Infection Control, and disaster preparedness. Facilitate the integration of nursing and surgical scrub technician students with their instructors and support staff orientation initiatives.
