Job Summary

As a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, this position provides advanced clinical psychiatric nursing care to referred clients. The successful candidate will perform psychiatric evaluations and provide ongoing medication management and treatment for clients. Ensuring accuracy of diagnosis and appropriate pharmacologic interventions is crucial, as well as supporting appropriate multidisciplinary interventions. This role also involves providing clinical leadership within the team to recommend program placement and coordinate interim treatment planning.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Perform comprehensive, diagnostic psychiatric evaluations and provide ongoing medication management and treatment for clients.
  2. Perform history and physical examinations and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines.
  3. Observe client progress, record findings, and formulate a plan and prognosis based on the client's condition.
  4. Discuss cases with supervising psychiatrists, other treatment team members, and other health professionals to prepare comprehensive care plans.
  5. Submit healthcare plans and goals of individual clients for periodic review and evaluation with the psychiatrist.
  6. Prescribe or recommend medication or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, diet, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
  7. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess clients' clinical problems and healthcare needs.
  8. Order laboratory tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures.
  9. Refer clients to psychiatrists for consultation or specialized healthcare resources for treatment.
  10. Cultivate clinical staff quality of care through consultation with and education of interdisciplinary personnel, clients, and their significant others.
  11. Perform crisis intervention using verbal and nonverbal techniques.
  12. Have on-call responsibilities and periodic clinical coverage for colleagues.
  13. Immediately report serious incidents, serious incident allegations, incidents, or sensitive situations to supervisors.
  14. Attend regularly scheduled clinical meetings and supervision.
  15. Attend professional development activities and training.
Additional Tasks
  1. Conduct workshops for clients and staff on health-related issues, including health maintenance, medications, and medication management.
  2. Precept nursing students and nurse practitioner students.
  3. Be assigned as a participant or facilitator of agency committees.
  4. Serve as the agency Bloodborne Pathogen Coordinator and teach the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard workshop, making recommendations concerning the agency's infection control posture.

  • Ability to effectively respond to and manage behavioral health emergencies.
  • Ability to perform and interact as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide psychiatric care to clients.

  • Ability to prepare accurate and timely reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, including communication by electronic means.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric emergency treatments and interventions.
  • Knowledge of teaching and consulting techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Agency's policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic needs of clients relating to cultural competence.
Qualifications and Experience

A Master's degree in nursing from an accredited nurse practitioner program, and current licensure in New York State as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), are required. Current DEA certification is also necessary. ANCC certification is an asset. Two years' experience with individuals suffering from co-occurring severe psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders is preferred. The candidate must be eligible for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs. A valid NYS driving license and a clear driving record may be required. Continued employment is based on the ability to maintain professional licensure and accreditation, and participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
