Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to join our team at the City of Hickory, NC. As a Fleet Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform engine, exhaust, steering, electrical, and brake repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment
  • Remove and replace transmissions, engines, and differentials
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes
  • Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, and heating and air conditioning repair
  • Check fluid levels and perform preventive maintenance by checking antifreeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, tires, and safety equipment on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment
  • Perform corrective maintenance procedures on heavy equipment, including transmission, hydraulic, electrical, brake, and various degrees of engine repair
  • Weld and fabricate parts
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical malfunctions for a variety of vehicles and equipment
  • Perform emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
  • Class B CDL driver's license preferred
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive and heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
  • Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines
  • Skill in diagnosing defects in automotive and heavy equipment
  • Skill in reading drawings and electrical diagrams
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools
  • Skill in repairing vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Skill in operating a welding torch and welder
  • Skill in computer diagnostics
  • Skill in oral and written communication
Work Environment

The work is typically performed outdoors and in a garage. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather.
