Job Summary

The Pre-Op PACU RN is responsible for assisting in the daily clinical operations of the Preop PACU in accordance with established federal, state, and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess patients' understanding of disease process and need for surgical intervention.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative teaching to patients and their families.
  • Manage patient care, including maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Assess patients for level of recovery from anesthesia and provide effective airway management.
  • Manage postoperative complications, such as nausea and vomiting.
  • Provide wound assessment and management to ensure uncomplicated wound healing.
  • Administer medications safely and effectively.
  • Manage patient complications and emergencies preoperatively and postoperatively.
  • Document controlled substance inventory and manage it appropriately.
  • Utilize aseptic technique and infection control principles to establish and maintain intravenous access.
  • Report significant patient information to medical staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in caring for latex-sensitive patients.
  • Initiate and follow procedures protocols.
  • Provide pain management and evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Document patient response during the postoperative period.
  • Facilitate actions and activities that support accountability to practice.
  • Identify and initiate problem resolution.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and promote quality care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical record policy and procedure in managing patient information.
Performance Standards and Success Indicators
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Utilize translation services when needed.
  • Communicate effectively with patients with speech and hearing disorders.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to adapt to new ideas and work in a changing environment.
  • Understand and participate in the quality improvement process.
  • Support initiatives designed to improve individual and organizational performance.
  • Provide patient care across the age span.
  • Identify and report suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse per protocol.
Qualifications
  • Current California RN license required.
  • Associate's degree in nursing required; Bachelor's preferred.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of clinical experience in PACU, surgery, or ER required.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards.
  • Interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  • Working knowledge of telephone, fax, and patient monitoring equipment.
