Job Summary

The US Veterans Health Administration is seeking a highly skilled Optometrist to fill a Clinical Care Specialist position. As a key member of our eye care team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality primary eye and vision care services to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality primary eye and vision care services, including examinations, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
  • Prescribe corrective lenses, order diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies as needed.
  • Prepare referrals for diagnosis, treatment, and management of systemic and ocular conditions.
  • Provide patient and family education on ocular health issues.
  • Provide emergency care, evaluate, and manage emergent, non-surgical eye conditions.
  • Perform clinical procedures, such as medical and ocular history, visual acuity measurement, pupillary function testing, and refractive and accommodative testing.
  • Collaborate with other optometrists, ophthalmologists, nursing staff, technicians, and administrators to facilitate operations within the service.
  • Perform administrative components of patient care management, including timely completion of progress notes, consults, and encounters.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of optometry resulting from a course of education in optometry.
  • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Physical Standards: Must meet physical requirements as outlined in the 'Physical Requirements' section of this announcement.
  • English Language Proficiency: Optometrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations

In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

  • Associate Grade: No additional requirements beyond the basic requirements.
  • Full Grade: Two years of optometric practice or its equivalent. One year of approved residency training or its creditable equivalent acceptable to the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association is acceptable in lieu of the 2 years of practice.
  • Intermediate Grade: Meets the requirements for Full Grade and the requirements in paragraphs (1) and (2) below.
  • Senior Grade: Meets the requirements for Intermediate Grade and the requirements in paragraphs (1) and (2) below.
