Job Summary

We are seeking a reliable and safety-conscious School Crossing Guard to ensure the safe passage of students to and from school. As a School Crossing Guard, you will be responsible for escorting or directing children/pedestrians across streets and stopping traffic as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Escort or direct children/pedestrians across streets and stop traffic as necessary.
  • Control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at street crossings.
  • Communicate rules of safety crossing practices to children.
  • Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within your assigned area.
  • Monitor traffic flow to identify safe gaps through which students/pedestrians may cross streets.
  • Follow basic principles of student safety at all times.
  • Establish good relationships with students, school staff, and parents.
  • Work in conjunction with school bus drivers to ensure children who must cross streets to board a bus or cross after leaving the bus are safe.
  • Posess active listening skills and understand what children, parents, and staff are attempting to communicate to you.
  • Convey information effectively.
  • Posess problem-solving skills incorporating sensitivity, speech clarity, and perceptiveness.
  • Follow general rules when caring for children.
  • Have knowledge of public safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Assess the needs of children and those around them.
  • Have knowledge of child behavior.
  • Work hours and schedule are determined on an annual basis.
  • Work on a part-time, seasonal basis and only work when school is in session.
  • Refrain from the use of obscene or harsh language.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate as outlined in the dress code expectations issued to each employee at the start of employment or the school year.
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.
  • Be self-motivated and possess the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Work both morning and afternoon shifts.
  • Be standing and visible at your posts throughout the entire shift.
  • Do not sit in cars while on duty.
  • Do not use tobacco products or electronic devices.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree preferred
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must be a City of Springfield resident
