At Massachusetts General Hospital, we are seeking a highly skilled Maxillofacial Surgical Assistant to join our oral surgery team. The successful candidate will work under the general direction of the Practice Manager, effectively communicating with the team while assisting during all phases of clinical sessions.

Key responsibilities include preparing each room with equipment and supplies, assisting with oral surgical procedures, and reviewing post-operative instructions with patients. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.

Additional requirements include knowledge of Universal Precautions, Dental Radiology, head and neck anatomy & physiology, aseptic techniques, chair-side assisting, basic CPR, and complications and emergencies during general anesthesia. A valid Dental Assistant License from the Board of Registration in Dentistry for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is required, with Certified as a Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) being preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare patient for treatment, review medical and dental history, and consult with medical practitioner
  • Conduct oral exam, take vital signs, and make appropriate notations in patient record
  • Assist with oral surgical procedures, including taking impressions, bite registrations, and fabricating models
  • Provide pre- and post-operative information to patients, including post-extraction instructions and care of wire jaw
  • Assist Oral Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local, nitrous oxide, I.V. valium, and deep sedation and general anesthesia

Requirements:

  • Valid Dental Assistant License from the Board of Registration in Dentistry for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Certified as a Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) preferred
  • Radiology and BLS certification required
  • Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) through the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons within the first 12 months of employment
