Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

Senior Optical Engineers are essential to KLA's technological advancements. While we do not currently have an opening, we are continuously cultivating our Optical Engineering talent community and are eager to learn about your expertise.

The Senior Optical Engineer within the LS-Swift group will contribute to ongoing projects and develop future generation products. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of classical optics or laser development. Responsibilities include modeling optical systems and phenomena (such as thermal lensing and laser damage), designing laboratory experiments to diagnose optical path issues, and analyzing experimental data. A crucial aspect of this role involves collaborating with the systems engineering team to establish an overall error budget for the optical system.

This position provides an opportunity for the right candidate to enhance their skills in the following areas:

  • Optical modeling (geometric optics and beam propagation)
  • Image simulation
  • Modeling of light sources
  • Light level estimates
  • Thermal lensing modeling
  • Coating fabrication
  • Coating laser damage
  • Optical testing
  • Optical specifications
  • Vendor coordination
The successful candidate need not possess expertise in all areas but should demonstrate a willingness to learn. We are committed to investing in the training of the right individual.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate or 2 years of relevant work experience, Master's Degree or 4 years of experience, Bachelor's Degree or 5 years of experience
  • Proficient in Matlab or equivalent
  • Proficient in ZeMax
  • Working knowledge of optical fundamentals (ray tracing, stray light, aberrations, diffraction)
  • Able to conduct tolerance analysis
  • Effective communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and deliver completed work products on schedule
  • Capable of performing experimental error budget analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of optical testing (interferometer and Shack Hartman)
  • Basic understanding of optical coatings
  • Statistical knowledge for manufacturability and yield
  • Experience with laser beam propagation
  • Experience with lasers and LEDs
  • Experience in designing laboratory test setups/knowledge of cameras and detectors
  • Familiarity with Fourier optics
  • Image simulation capabilities (Matlab)
  • Image analysis capabilities
