The Manufacturing Process Engineer role encompasses responsibilities including, but not limited to:

Factory Support:
Utilizing intricate schematics and parts lists to create assembly work instructions.

Applying expertise in electronics assembly to support the build team.

Assisting the build team in adhering to J-STD-001, IPC-610, IPC-620, and relevant military standards.

Designing and implementing assembly tools and fixtures.

Resolving technical manufacturing challenges related to materials, designs, equipment, tooling, training, and instructions to facilitate production.

Creating rework processes and guidelines.

Monitoring process yields and costs, proposing and executing quality enhancements to improve metrics.

Supporting the training of new staff and contributing to the development of operational training materials.

Assisting factory maintenance teams with troubleshooting and repairing process equipment.

Documenting designs for product-specific tooling.

Assisting in the development of capacity models, workspace layouts, and product workflow routings.

Process Development:
Creating and updating process documentation.

Providing ROI analysis for process enhancements.

Identifying process capability gaps, potential improvements, capacities, and new manufacturing technologies.

Specifying, identifying, and acquiring new manufacturing equipment for production.

Creating and managing project plans (tasks, resources, and timelines) for process development initiatives and new equipment implementation.

Developing and refining process parameters.

Collaborating with the entire manufacturing team to apply lean and continuous improvement methodologies (PDCA, DOE, SPC, TPM, TQM, etc.).

Enhancing new and existing manufacturing processes with a focus on production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Design and Engineering Support:
Recommending product design enhancements to improve manufacturability.

Documenting advanced process capabilities and guidelines for product designers.

Participating in design reviews for new products to ensure manufacturability.

Utilizing Design to Cost (DTC), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), and Design for Automation (DFA) methodologies to provide cost-effective solutions.

Assisting design engineers in understanding the manufacturing implications of the realized design.

Collaborating with the design team to address technical issues arising during product realization.

Miscellaneous:
Providing supplier support as necessary to resolve issues within the supply chain.

Offering input for Requests for Proposals (RFPs) related to Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) requirements such as tooling, capital equipment, and new process development.

Occasional travel to suppliers and customers may be required.


The selected candidate must excel in multitasking within a fast-paced, dynamic, and high-visibility environment; collaborate effectively in a team setting; and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.


This position may be filled as either a Principal Manufacturing Process Engineer or a Senior Principal Manufacturing Process Engineer based on the qualifications outlined below.


Basic Qualifications for a Principal Manufacturing Process Engineer:
A Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a related STEM field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in Manufacturing/Process Engineering, Production, or a related area - OR - a Master's degree with 3 years of experience.


Hands-on experience with electronics assembly processes and equipment such as epoxy dispensing and curing, conformal coating, thermal interface material dispense/application, soldering, mechanical assembly, Automated Optical Inspection, component/assembly testing, etc.

Experience with 3D Solid Modeling using CAD software.

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Manufacturing Process Engineer:

A Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a related STEM field and a minimum of 9 years of experience in Manufacturing/Process Engineering, Production, or a related area - OR - a Master's degree in a STEM field and 7 years of experience.


Hands-on experience with electronics assembly processes and equipment such as epoxy dispensing and curing, conformal coating, thermal interface material dispense/application, soldering, mechanical assembly, Automated Optical Inspection, component/assembly testing, etc.

Experience with 3D Solid Modeling using CAD software.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with J-STD and MIL-STD requirements, including MIL-STD-883 & MIL-PRF-38534, J-STD, IPC.

3D modeling experience in Unigraphics/NX.

Experience with assembly tooling, concept development, and tool creation.

Familiarity with the Teamcenter Manufacturing tool suite and Manufacturing Process Planning.

Knowledge of Design of Experiment (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Six Sigma principles for process development and control.

Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

Experience with robotics or automation.

Salary Range:
$93,000 - $139,600

Salary Range 2:
$115,400 - $173,200


The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director roles may qualify for Long Term Incentives.
