JOB OVERVIEW:

The Automation Engineer will be responsible for the design, configuration, deployment, and maintenance of programmable logic control (PLC) systems throughout the facility. Key responsibilities include upgrading existing systems, implementing ongoing enhancements, and troubleshooting software within a real-time manufacturing context.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and enhance existing automation systems. Design, implement, debug, and support new automation initiatives.
  • Develop and troubleshoot advanced PLC logic across various platforms, including Siemens, Allen Bradley, Control Logix, and SLC series.
  • Install and configure specialized intelligent I/O and communication cards on multiple platforms, including Siemens WinCC and Allen Bradley PLC.
  • Understand the operational theory of basic sensing devices such as proximity detectors and encoders.
  • Configure hardware for process control software and develop user interfaces for process control PCs and operator touch screens.
  • Terminate control wiring and program AC and DC frequency drives, including systems application drives.
  • Familiarity with the operation and troubleshooting of AC and DC motors, frequency drives, stepper motors, and servo controls.
  • Utilize advanced test equipment, including oscilloscopes and power monitoring devices.
  • Develop moderate to advanced software applications for data access and manipulation from central data warehouses and process controllers.
  • Understand basic electrical codes and power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of digital communication theories and protocols, including Ethernet, Profibus, Device Net, and RS-232.
  • Manage the timely completion of moderate to complex projects, overseeing various trades and material purchasing.
  • Be available for on-call work, including nights and weekends.
  • Collaborate with Plant Operations and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) to identify and implement process control improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with PLCs, process computers, variable speed drives, and feedback control loops.
  • Lead control system project development, including defining objectives, functional requirements, and specifications.
  • Design and conduct control system staging and testing prior to deployment.
  • Document and implement new control schemes for process enhancement.
  • Create and maintain project documentation, including program files and blueprints.
  • Provide automation and controls training to Maintenance Technicians.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in a safe and operable condition.
  • Utilize hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the Maintenance area and other workspaces.
  • Record maintenance data accurately.
  • Adhere to Total Productive Manufacturing (TPM) procedures.
  • Work scheduled days in compliance with the Plant Attendance Policy.
  • Work overtime as required.
  • Follow procedures outlined in the Shaw Management System (SMS).
  • Assist Maintenance staff as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A four-year degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering from an accredited institution is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Advanced training and proficiency in ladder logic and DCS programming are required.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley's RSView and/or Siemens' WinCC HMI is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of computer control systems in relation to manufacturing processes and product quality.
  • Excellent hardware and networking troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to convey technical details clearly to various stakeholders, including subordinates and management.
