Job Summary

WestCare Foundation is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Recreational Therapist to join our team at the Sheridan Correctional Center in IL. As a Recreational Therapist, you will provide programming and activities to clients participating in the program, focusing on their treatment issues and improving their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement recreational therapy programs and activities to meet the needs of clients.
  • Provide one-to-one and group treatments, as well as co-treatments with other disciplines.
  • Conduct assessments, interviews, and chart reviews to evaluate client progress.
  • Plan and develop programs and treatment sessions based on client needs and abilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions and make adjustments as needed.
  • Attend meetings and participate in the interdisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Provide consultation and education to counseling staff on recreational therapy and therapeutic recreation programs.
  • Stay up-to-date with recent research and techniques by attending professional workshops and conferences.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field.
  • Accredited as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or eligible to take the exam.
  • One year of experience in a psychiatric, behavioral health, or correctional setting, preferably administering therapeutic groups and leading participation-oriented activities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and exercise good judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to pass background checks, obtain OIG LEIE clearance, and maintain CPR certification and first aid certification.
Working Conditions

The work environment is primarily institutional, and the employee must be able to perform the essential duties and activities with or without accommodation.

The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, sit for long periods, and lift up to 50 pounds. They must also be able to express themselves clearly and accurately, hear and see well, and work in a fast-paced environment with high levels of stress and emotional demands.
