We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Building Nurse to join our team at Community Unit School District No. 308. As a key member of our health services team, you will provide high-quality nursing care to students and staff, ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment.
Responsibilities:- Provide direct professional nursing services, including administering medication, first aid, and responding to emergencies.
- Use knowledge of health issues and assessment skills to determine appropriate interventions in accordance with professional nursing standards, district policy, and procedures.
- Take and record temperatures of children when indicated, and stay with and comfort sick or injured children until the parent or guardian arrives.
- Complete accident/incident reports for students and staff, and forward them to the district office in a timely manner.
- Keep a complete, daily, electronic log of all student injuries and illnesses seen by the Building Nurse.
- Initiate contact with and act as liaison between home and school to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Be aware of and follow Illinois Department of Public Health rules and regulations regarding communicable disease policies.
- Notify nursing supervisor, building administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the health and safety needs of students and staff.
- Evaluate and maintain student health records for compliance, and follow Illinois Department of Public Health rules and regulations for immunizations, physical examinations, sports physicals, dental and eye examinations, and related archival responsibilities.
- Administer daily and PRN medications under district guidelines, educate students on proper medication administration, and act as a resource for staff regarding their students' medication.
- Formulate a confidential list of students' health concerns, distribute the list to teachers on a need-to-know basis, and make phone contact with parents of students who are absent and not called in by the parent or guardian.
- Work with the attendance specialist to evaluate excessive absences/tardies of students, arrange and perform mandated vision/hearing screenings, and conduct rescreens, referrals, and follow-up.
- Serve as an active member of the Problem Prevention and Support Team (PPST), bringing medical and attendance information to the team which may be important to the academic/behavioral performance of the student being evaluated.
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and coverage for health-related programs, provide health counseling as needed for staff, students, and parents, and maintain a professional, organized, clean environment in the health office.
- Follow district and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Rules and Regulations, and act as a resource to staff regarding these guidelines.
- Inform the Principal or certified nurse of any unusual student health concerns or circumstances as they occur, and perform other health or job-related work as assigned.
- RN with current Illinois license in good standing.
- Depending on the nature of the assignment, Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing may be required.
- Knowledge of the ethical and legal expectations set forth in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
- Current CPR/AED certification.
- Knowledge of Bloodborne Pathogen Policy and Procedures.
- Recent experience as a registered nurse (with the exception of new graduates).
- Ability to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
The Building Nurse will work in a fast-paced environment, interacting with students, staff, and parents, and will be required to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
