Overview:

SEASPAR is a special recreation association that provides recreational programming specifically for children and adults with disabilities. We serve twelve communities in eastern DuPage and southern Cook counties, and our home base is in Downers Grove.

We are seeking a reliable and energetic Special Recreation Assistant to support and assist individuals with disabilities in our recreation programs.

About the Role:

This part-time/seasonal position will work with youth in various locations throughout our service area, including La Grange, Brookfield, Western Springs, La Grange Park, Willowbrook, or Clarendon Hills. The ideal candidate will have experience working with individuals with disabilities and possess excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist and include individuals with disabilities in program activities
  • Adapt activities, rules, equipment, and supplies as needed to ensure quality participation and independent participation
  • Act as an advocate for individuals with disabilities and emphasize their abilities and similarities while de-emphasizing their differences
  • Be alert and responsive to health and safety needs of individuals with disabilities
  • Involve yourself with other participants and staff to contribute to the whole program and avoid being singled out as a SEASPAR staff member
  • Discuss program activities with program instructors to be prepared and offer suggestions and adaptations if applicable
  • Provide behavior management when necessary
  • Feed, diaper/take to the bathroom, lift, and transfer individuals with disabilities if applicable
  • Communicate all incidents/accidents to the program supervisor and Inclusion Manager immediately
  • Communicate with parents and Inclusion Manager on a regular basis and complete biweekly summary sheets on participants' progress
  • Be flexible and adaptable to accommodate fluctuations in schedule
  • Follow member entities' policies and procedures
  • Read, understand, and abide by all SEASPAR policies and procedures
  • Must be dependable and punctual for all programs
  • Perform other duties asked by supervisor
  • Regular and predictable on-site attendance

Requirements:

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred
  • Possess a reliable mode of transportation
  • Sixteen years of age or older
  • Availability to commit to assigned work times/placements
  • Ability to work independently

Estimated Salary: $12-$15 per hour, depending on experience. This is a non-exempt, part-time/seasonal position. Hours vary but will not exceed 25 hours per week or 950 hours per year for part-time or 40 hours per week for seasonal.
