Position Overview
The Delaware Department of Transportation, Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, is seeking a Lead Psychiatrist for our psychiatric facility. This full-time position (37.5 hours/week) oversees comprehensive psychiatric, medical, laboratory, and pharmacy services at our state-operated facility, catering to both community and forensic clients. Key responsibilities include upholding clinical standards, supervising a team of psychiatrists and primary care physicians, engaging in committees, and delivering direct patient care. The Lead Psychiatrist will also support the Psychiatry Residency Program and report to the Medical Director.Key Responsibilities
The following are essential functions that are fundamental to this role:
- Conduct thorough diagnostic interviews and physical assessments to evaluate the mental and physical health of individuals.
- Develop comprehensive psychiatric evaluations.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team, including nurses and psychologists, to formulate effective treatment and discharge plans.
- Administer therapeutic interventions in line with established treatment plans.
- Monitor patient progress and responses to treatment.
- Provide clinical guidance to psychiatric residents and medical students.
- Offer expert testimony or prepare opinions for legal proceedings.
- Contribute to ongoing research initiatives.
- Maintain accurate medical documentation and prepare necessary reports.
Qualifications
Requirements for Lead Psychiatrist
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- Possession of a valid Delaware Physician M.D. or D.O. license or eligibility for licensure in Delaware.
- Certification as a specialist in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
- A minimum of three years of experience in psychiatric practice.
- At least six months of experience in health or human services program administration, including overseeing program development and evaluation.
- Six months of experience in policy and procedure development.
- Knowledge of staff supervision through academic training or practical experience in leading and evaluating the work of others.
